The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy is a government department supported by 46 agencies and public bodies that was created in 2016 as a result of the merger between the former Department of Energy and Climate Change and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
It is responsible for a number of UK Government policy areas such as business and industrial strategy, science, innovation, energy and climate change. The Department is in charge of developing and delivering a comprehensive industrial strategy and leading the Government’s relationships with businesses, along with securing affordable and clean energy supplies to the country. In particular, it deals also with ensuring cutting-edge research, science and innovation within UK.
The BEIS work experience programme is intended to support young people aged 18-30 years old, who are facing difficulty getting into work. The programme is designed to help you develop your confidence and learn new and valuable skills, and give you real, on-the-job experience of working in the Civil Service.
What does a typical placement look like?
This placement will be focused on supporting the BEIS HR Recruitment Team in the delivery of two recruitment campaigns; the BEIS Graduate Programme and the Experienced Entrant Programme.
The placement candidate would be expected to undertake activities such as:
– Support the initial paper sift stage of the campaigns including grouping volunteers into assement panels, emailing the panels the required information, e.g. candidate applications, and collating the results.
– Support the interview stage of the campaigns including grouping volunteers into interview panels, emailing the panels the required information e.g. interview guidance and candidate applications, collecting candidates from reception and escorting them to their interview room, photocopying candidate documentation, printing interview documentation and collating interview results.
– Respond to general queries from candidates and managers within the Department.
This placement is within a busy, fast-paced team. Candidates will be expected to use Outlook for email and calendars and Microsoft Office programmes, such as Word and Excel. An ability to pick up new I.T. based processes quickly is important.
The ream relies on working together so being a team-player is important.
This role sits within the BEIS HR Recruitment Team. There are 10 people in the direct team you will work with.
We have regular morning meetings to establish priorities for the day and week.
You would work closely with 2 or 3 members of the team who will advise you on what tasks you need to complete and provide support until you are able to do them yourself.
What you should wear:
Smart-casual. When working with candidates you are representing the Department so must be appropriately dressed, however, smart business attire is not required.
